Looking back at 2024 + Happy New Year!
And what's starting out as a friendly 2025 hiring market...
Hi All!
A very happy New Year to everyone! It feels good to be back. For those of you who don’t know, I was out on paternity leave the last two months as we welcomed our third kiddo (and first girl), baby Rose!
In other exciting news, and as is GGR tradition, I wanted to start off 2025 by taking a look back at 2024. Check out the graphics below for a recap on the past year and some insight into how our business, and the overall market, fared. As you hopefully saw, we got started on our 2024 Compensation Survey, so don’t forget to fill that out if you haven’t (link). If you have, appreciate you 🙏 Results will be emailed next week - let us know if you don’t get anything!
And finally, a quick update on the market. TL;DR - things are busy! Like BUSY busy. The market is heating up 🔥 and we are busy for the first time in 2 years….so we have a number of new roles we’re working on (more below!).
❤️ Phil and the Golden Gate team
2024 GGR Year in Review
👫 Gender parity: not necessarily a reflection of the market, but our placement by gender did skew more than the 50-50 split we’ve had in most previous years. We’re committed to continuing our goal to push for more women in these roles across early stage tech/VC.
🔥 Q4 coming in hot: 2024 had its ups and downs - it was definitely a slower start to the year but held steady throughout the middle. Momentum throughout the end of the year left us feeling optimistic about the trajectory for 2025!
🤝 Startups + VC + PE: we continued to focus on roles with startups and VC, but also grew our footprint amongst PE-backed companies. Classic 80/20 rule 😏???
👀 Focus on early stage: similar to last year, demand sat prominently with early stage startups compared to 2021/2022, and we saw an even greater pullback amongst the late-stage, pre-IPO unicorns where hiring remained slow.
🏢 Return-to-work is real: we saw an even bigger move towards in-person/hybrid vs. remote opportunities in 2024, a growing trend amongst companies and candidates who are optimizing for at least some opportunity to connect and collaborate live.
✨ Top talent: our partners continue to focus on young, hungry up-and-coming stars who are punching above their weight class and working towards leadership positions.
In case anyone is interested, or wants to compare, here’s last year’s 2023 year in review.
Annual Compensation Study
Many of you likely got an email from us already, but we recently launched our annual comp survey for startup generalists, and would love more input! If you’re currently in a generalist role at a startup/non-public tech company (BizOps, Strategy & Ops, Chief of Staff, GM, go-to-market, VP Operations, etc.) we'd love to hear from you.
Please feel free to fill out your information HERE - promise it’ll take no more than 5 minutes to complete, and the more data we get, the more helpful it will be for everyone (plus you'll get a link to last year's data). We have ~400 responses, but need more for the most useful results!
In the meantime, check out last year's summary output.
